Vegvisir literally means "that which shows the way" and is known as the Viking compass. It is believed that the Vegvisir symbol helps the wearer find their way, especially in rough weather.

The Vegvisir is mentioned in the Huld manuscript, compiled by Geir Vigfusson.

The term "Vegvisir" is derived from the Icelandic words "Vegur," meaning "way," and "Visir," meaning "pointer." Therefore, Vegvisir literally means "signpost."
