Aegishjalmur is a symbol of protection and victory. The word "Aegishjalmur" is derived from two different Old Norse words: "aegis" meaning "shield" and "hjalmr" meaning "helm."

Viking warriors would carve this symbol between their eyebrows for protection against their enemies as they headed into battle. However, the symbol provided more than just "physical protection."
