The first writing systems developed and used by the Norse and other Germanic peoples were rune alphabets. The runes served as letters, but they were much more than that. Traditionally, runes were carved into stone, wood, bone, metal, or a similarly hard surface, rather than drawn with ink and quill on parchment.
