How to Find Your Ring Size
Determine Your Ring Size
If you're not particular and don't mind which finger you wear your ring on:
- Choose size 9 or 10, as these are the average sizes purchased by 90% of men.
- For women, the most commonly purchased size is 7.
If you already know your finger size or measurements (in mm), you can go straight to the size chart.
Measure Your Finger with a String:
- Wrap a piece of string around your finger, ensuring it accounts for the size of your knuckle.
- Mark the spot where the two ends of the string meet with a pen.
- Measure the distance in cm between the marked point and the end of the string to determine your ring size using the chart below!

If you really cannot determine another person’s ring size, it may be helpful to know that the average ring size for men is 9 to 10, and for women, it is 6 to 6.5.
If you have no other way to find out someone’s ring size and need to make an estimate, it’s better to aim for the higher end of your guess. This ensures the ring will at least fit on the person’s finger when you surprise them with your gift, even if it needs to be resized later.

If you visit a jewellery store to buy a ring, the seller will have a ring sizing tool—a set of metal rings that you can try on to determine your correct size. But if you’re purchasing rings online and don’t know your finger size, how can you figure out which ring size will fit you? Here’s a practical guide to measuring your ring size at home.
What Time of Day Should You Measure Your Ring Size?
The size of your fingers changes throughout the day, as it can be affected by temperature.
- When it’s very cold, your ring size will be smaller than usual.
- When it’s very hot, your ring size will be larger.
In fact, your ring size can fluctuate by up to half a size during the day. The best time to measure your ring size is in the evening when the temperature is closer to the average.
Which Finger Should You Measure?
Always measure the specific finger for which you’re buying the ring. Do not measure the same finger on the opposite hand, as the fingers on your dominant hand are likely about half a size larger than those on your non-dominant hand.
What Type of Ring Are You Buying?
The type of ring you’re purchasing can affect how you measure your size, as can the positioning of the ring on your finger.
- If you’re buying a ring with a wide band, choose a size half a size larger than your actual ring size for greater comfort.
- Measure the part of your finger where the ring will be worn.
How to Measure Your Finger at Home
To determine your ring size, you need to measure the circumference or diameter of your finger. While you can buy your own ring sizing tool, it’s probably unnecessary since most of us don’t buy rings very often.
To measure your finger:
- Use a piece of paper or string and wrap it around your finger, ensuring it’s not too tight.
- Mark where the paper or string meets to form a circle.
- Measure the length of the paper or string to find the circumference of your finger.
How to Calculate Your Ring Size
Once you know the circumference of your finger, it’s easy to find your ring size. Simply match your measurement (in millimetres or inches) to the size chart to determine your US ring size.
Ring Sizes Vary by Country
If you’re buying a ring from a foreign website, check the local ring sizes as different countries use different sizing standards.
- US Sizes: Used in the US and Canada.
- UK, Australia, and Ireland: Use a letter system to denote ring sizes.
- India, Japan, and China: Use a numbering system different from the US.
- Other Countries: May use ISO standard sizes.
Our ring size chart includes UK, Japanese, and Swiss sizes for reference.
How to Find Someone Else’s Ring Size and Surprise Them
If you want to surprise someone with a ring, finding the right size can be tricky.
- Borrow a ring they already own and measure its diameter (ensure it’s for the same finger the new ring is intended for).
- Ask someone who might know, such as the person’s parents or friends.
If you truly cannot determine their ring size, it helps to know that:
- The average ring size for men is 9 to 10.
- The average ring size for women is 6 to 6.5.
If you need to guess, it’s better to overestimate so the ring will at least fit on their finger when you surprise them, even if it needs resizing later.
